What’s Behind the Golf R

VW celebrates new ways forward with a story told in reverse.


This spot is part of the launch campaign for the 2022 Golf R as well as a brand love initiative designed to remind people that Volkswagens are fun to drive.

The Idea

It features a fast driving POV journey through the colorful narrow streets of an ancient town. As we pass people and cars along the way, we  begin to realize something unusual about the drive.  Towards the end it’s revealed that the POV sprint was captured from the rear of a car traveling in reverse.

The Look

It’s part commercial and part stunt as much of the backward driving was performed in-camera.

The :30 spot launched during the NBA Finals on 6/2 and continues to run on TV, Online Video, digital and social channels in various formats.
